2000 - Week 8
Hm. Not much to say. It was awful. Here's the ugly recap:
- To begin with, we actually set a record in this game. The 38 points Alabama scored is the most that they have ever scored in a losing cause. The previous high was 34, set three times, most recently against Michigan in the Orange Bowl last year. The Tide is now 15-1 when they score 38 in a game, and 180-1 when they score 38 or more. They're 0-4 when they give up 40 in a game. (The most Alabama has ever given up in a game and won is 39, set in the Swamp last year.)
- This is only the second time Alabama has been 3-5. The other year was 1984.
- When both teams combine for 78 points, the Tide is now 0-2. The other occurrence of this came in 1906, when Vanderbilt handed Alabama its worst ever beating - 78-0.
- This is the 12th time Alabama has lost by two points in a game.
- Bama is now 9-3 on October 28th.
- As mentioned previously, this was the first time that Alabama has played Central Florida, making them the 112th team to suit up against Alabama. The Tide is 82-28-2 against all opponents in the first game between the two.
- Since the Golden Knights now hold an all-time series lead of 1-0, they mark only the 16th team of 112 to hold a winning record against the Tide, and only the 8th still playing I-A football. 22 teams hold a .500 record or better against Alabama.
- At this point, Alabama is in a somewhat rare position. At 3-5, we have still scored more than our opponents this year (193-178). There are only three previous years in which Alabama had a losing record yet had more points than its opponents' total (1951: 5-6-0, 263-188; 1954: 4-5-2, 123-104; 1984: 5-6-0, 226-208).
- Finally, a really sad note. Bama went 0-3 in nonconference games this year. Since the inception of the SEC, this is only the third year that Alabama went winless in nonconference games. The other two were 1955 (overall record 0-10) and 1956 (overall record 2-7-1).
Up Next - LSU
Okay, let's try to be upbeat. We could still win the SEC West (unlikely as that is). And we haven't lost in Tiger Stadium since 1969, which everyone knows. Here's another couple of facts...
- Alabama has 42 wins against LSU, tying them with Tennessee for the third-most victories against one team for Alabama. The teams first played in 1895, making this Alabama's fourth-oldest opponent that we still play (tied with Georgia, and behind Auburn (1892 season), Tulane (1894), and Ole Miss (1894).
