2001 - Week 4
This is a bitter pill to swallow, isn't it? It was just a disappointing loss. Well, here's the stats anyway...
- Bama never lost a 37-36 game before this past week. Alabama has lost 20 games by the slimmest of margins, the last before this week coming in 1999 against Louisiana Tech.
- South Carolina gets their first win on the field against the Tide; they're now 1-10 overall against Alabama. That leaves Birmingham-Southern and Chattanooga as the teams Alabama has the most victories against without a blemish, at 10-0 each. For most without a loss, Alabama has a 20-0-1 all-time record against Samford.
- Bama takes their first loss when scoring 36; they're now 8-1. Alabama is 0-2-1 when allowing 37 points.
- This marks the third time in three years that Alabama has scored 34 points or more and lost the game (35-34 against Michigan in the 2000 Orange Bowl, 40-38 last year against UCF). It had only happened two times previously in Alabama history (41-34 against Tennessee in 1983, 40-34 against Kentucky in 1997). Alabama also had a 37-37 tie with Florida State in 1967. Alabama is 260-5-1 when scoring 36 or more points.
- Alabama is now 2-2; they've started the season 2-2 eleven times, the most recent before this year in 1998. Bama's best record after a 2-2 start is 9-3, in 1976.
- Bama is 6-3 on games played on September 29.
Up Next - UTEP
The Miners come to Birmingham next. Here's some notes:
- Bama has never played the Miners. They will be the 113th different opponent Alabama has faced.
- It's Alabama's first Birmingham game of the year; Alabama is 203-79-20 in Birmingham over the years.
- But here's an interesting fact: each of the five years Bama's beaten Arkansas since they joined the SEC, the Tide has wound up in the SEC Championship game.
- Interesting fact of the week: against current WAC teams, Alabama is only 8-5 (3-2 against Louisiana Tech, 0-3 against Rice, 2-0 against SMU, 3-0 against Tulsa).
- Bama plays on my birthday this year! They're 8-3 on October 6.
