I made a startling revelation tonight. One that I'm sure everyone will need to know about. It's very important and could very well change the world as we know it. It's something that I've had a hunch about for quite some time, but never really investigated it fully enough to make this life-changing declaration.
I don't hate Italian salad dressing.
Now, before you call CNN, let me explain. Italian is the one major dressing (with the possible exception of Bleu Cheese, but nobody likes that stuff) that I've always shyed away from. I've just never gone near the stuff because it looks nasty, so I've always assumed it tasted that way. I had French dressing just about every day of my life when I was a kid. When I got burned out on that I switched to Thousand Island, and lately I've been inclined to get Ranch.
Enter The Olive Garden. I've eaten there a few times, and, like everybody else in the world, am in love with their salad and breadsticks. Forget the main course...the sides rock the world. Anyhow, a close informant of mine informed me (because that's what informants do) not too long ago that the dressing on the salads at Olive Garden is Italian. Whoa, hold on! After I let this fact soak in, I realized that it made sense given the nature of the restaurant. But I liked an Italian dressing! I only ate it the first time because that place is really expensive, so I figured I might as well get my money's worth. And next thing I know I actually like the stuff! Could it be that all Italian dressings are good, but I've just never given them a chance?
Well, tonight was the moment of truth. It was time to put Italian dressings to the ultimate test. If the Fat Free Italian dressing they use in Burke Cafeteria is good, then they must ALL be good. I tried it, and, well, I liked it. Silly me...I've wasted 19 years of my life staying away from a dressing that I really have nothing against! Mind you, I didn't say it was great or anything, but I just couldn't find it in my heart to say that I hated it.
We can all learn a lesson from this. I don't know what it is, but there's bound to be a lesson here somewhere. Maybe I'll figure it out someday. Then again, maybe I'll try Bleu Cheese dressing sometime.
